Both the Winneshiek County Democratic and Republican parties addressed frac-sand mining during their recent county conventions, according to Lyle Otte, spokesperson for the Winneshiek County Protectors.

Otte said the Democrats voted in favor of trying to gain local control over the issue of frac-sand mining in the area.

“The County Board of Supervisors and Planning and Zoning Commission are urged to pass land-use restrictions that keep our beautiful hills and streams the way they are,” said Otte.

At the Republican convention, county Republicans also passed a plank regarding the activity.

“We support ensuring due diligence in research and study are done before making any decision regarding frac-sand mining,” said Mike Klimesh, representing the Winneshiek County Republicans.
