The Decorah Public Library welcomes Viroqua, Wis. author Barbara Kailean Welsh Tuesday, Nov. 12, at 6:30 pm.

Welsh will be discussing her book “Blazing a Trail: The Unconventional Life of Harriet Hosmer.”

Mount Hosmer, the scenic lookout in Lansing, Iis named after this extraordinary young woman who became one of America’s first female sculptors.

Throughout her life, Hosmer challenged 19th century expectations for women. She traveled the wilderness of the American west on her own, studied anatomy at a time when it was deemed unsuitable for women, and later in life lobbied for women’s right to vote.

Hosmer’s creations are still displayed at some of the world’s most famous museums, libraries and parks today.

This free author event will take place in the Decorah Public Library’s Mezzanine. Call the library at 563-382-3717 for more information.
