Decorah high school baseball alumni and their families are invited to celebrate the contributions of Dennis and Paula Olejniczak to the Viking baseball program Friday, June 28, when the Vikings host Oelwein at Olejniczak Field.
Coach Olejnczak retired last August after serving as the Vikings' head baseball coach for 55 seasons.
Dennis and Paula are planning to be at the ballpark by five p.m. Alumni, their families and supporters are invited to visit with the Olejniczak’s prior to the varsity game. They will be recognized in a ceremony at approximately 6:30 p.m. that will be held following the junior varsity contest.
Following the varsity game, supporters are invited to a social which will be held at Good Times, located on College Drive in the Pyramid Plaza.
The junior varsity game will begin at 5 p.m. followed by the varsity game beginning at 7 p.m.

Under Olejniczak’s leadership, the Vikings experienced consistent success to the tune of 18 Northeast Iowa Conference Titles, 11 State Tournament appearances with nine championship game appearances and three State Titles. During that span, Olejnczak and the Vikings played 1,962 games, winning 1,409 of them and losing 553. After coaching one year at Janesville in 1963, Olejniczak ended his career with 1,417 wins ranking him second all-time amongst high school baseball coaches in the United States.
During a 20-year run between 1973 and 1992, the Vikings won 15 NEIC Titles and qualified for five straight state tournaments between 1989 and 1992 with four straight championship game appearances winning to titles. During his Hall of Fame Career, Coach Olejniczak was named District Coach of the Year by the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association 12 times, State Coach of the Year three times and in 2009 was named National Coach of the Year by the National High School Coaches Association.
