More than 160 students have registered to attend the Iowa Youth Caucus at Decorah High School Thursday, making it the largest youth caucus in the state, according to Winneshiek County Republican Chair Tom Hansen. The Iowa Secretary of State’s office in partnership with both the state Democratic and Republican parties and Polk County party leaders are organizing the first statewide Iowa Youth Caucus at locations throughout the state Thursday, Nov. 19.
The youth caucus for Winneshiek County will be held at the Decorah High School. Registration and dinner is 4:30-5:30 p.m. with the caucus starting at 5:30. All high school students, parents and teachers are invited to attend. All students will participate in both a Republican and Democratic caucus.
During the caucus, students will be educated about Iowa’s first-in-the nation-role and how Democrats and Republicans operate their caucuses differently. Then organizers will conduct a mock caucus in which students will participate and ultimately support a presidential candidate. The results will be reported by the Secretary of State’s office.
Participants should register with their social studies teacher at their school. For more information about the Winneshiek County event, contact Matt Tapscott, Winneshiek County Democrats, 563-387-7413,, or Thomas Hansen, Winneshiek Republicans, 563-419-1496,
