Decorah has not been selected for the 2019 Main Street Iowa program.
Michael Wagler, state coordinator for Main Street Iowa (Iowa Economic Development Authority), recently notified Llew Jenkins, chair of the Decorah Main Street Steering Committee, about the status of Decorah's application. In an email to Jenkins, Wagler stated:
“Thank you for your conversation today. As I mentioned this afternoon, unfortunately the Main Street Iowa Advisory Council did not recommend Decorah for Main Street Iowa designation in 2019. Decorah’s application was competitive with many positive elements.
“However, the Main Street Iowa Advisory Council noted a number of items they would recommend Decorah enhance for a future Main Street Iowa application. The Advisory Council was unanimous that Decorah would be an excellent fit for the Main Street Iowa network and recommended that Decorah apply again in the future if it makes sense for the local community and development partners."
Had Decorah been selected, the Main Street program would have targeted Water Street and College Drive for downtown economic development through the context of historic preservation and restoration of buildings, facades and signage.
The Main Street Steering Committee will be meeting this Friday with Michael Wagler as a follow-up to the presentation, Jenkins said.
“We will receive details as to why Decorah was not one of the communities chosen for 2019. We will report the conclusions to the community after this meeting,” she said.
According to the Main Street Iowa timeline, one or two communities that were chosen will be formally announced and celebrated this week by Main Street representatives.
"Decorah sends their congratulations to them and wishes them well," Jenkins said.
