Decorah’s Jan Heikes has announced her candidacy for the Iowa State Senate District 28 seat.
“I have started laying the groundwork for a campaign for the Iowa State Senate in District 28 in 2016,” said Heikes, a Democrat.
Republican Michael Breitbach currently holds the position. He is serving his first, four-year term in the Senate.
“After more than 30 years of experience serving families and individuals in Northeast Iowa, I am excited about this new opportunity. I have the experience and ability to go to the Iowa Senate to make Northeast Iowa a better place to live, work and raise a family,” said Heikes.
Heikes was the Winneshiek County central point of coordination for many years, coordinating county funding of developmental disabilities, mental health, general assistance and substance abuse services for residents of the county, before taking a job in 2013 as program planner in the Community Services Bureau of the Iowa Department of Human Services.
“I look forward to talking personally with the people of Winneshiek, Allamakee, Clayton and Fayette counties over the next year,” she said.
Heikes said she would make a formal announcement of her candidacy at a later date.
