Dragonfly Books will present husband and wife authors Stephanie Ash and Geoff Herbach as they share stories and talk about their books Thursday, Feb. 16, at 7 p.m. at Dragonfly Books.
Oelwein native, Stephanie Ash will talk about her debut novel “The Annie Year” while Geoff Herbach will talk about his award-winning series for young adults, “Stupid Fast.”
The whole family is invited to this unique event featuring books for adults and youth.
Filled with humor and insight, “The Annie Year” and “Stupid Fast” embody the quirkiness, heartache and realities of life. Though writing for different ages, Ash and Herbach write with honesty and vulnerability about the choices we make and the impact we have on those around us.
Stephanie Ash is a former editor at Mpls. St. Paul Magazine. Ash was one of the literary/musical comedians behind the Lit 6 Project (loud, drunken, funny, connected stories told in bars across the Midwest), the Electric Arc Radio Show (episodic musical comedy heard on Minnesota Public Radio), and Don’t Crush our Heart! (the world’s only full-length twee-pop musical/courtroom drama). Currently, Ash is the editorial director of Gustavus Adolphus College. “The Annie Year” is Ash’s first novel.
Wee Wisconsin boy Geoff Herbach wanted to play for the Green Bay Packers or join The Three Stooges. His tight hamstrings left him only writing. Now he writes young adult novels and teaches at Minnesota State - Mankato, where he blows his students' minds with tales of football and comedy glory, none of which are true.
Ash and Herbach parent four children and split their time between Minneapolis and a log cabin in Mankato, Minn. originally homesteaded by German immigrants but rebuilt with two bathrooms and radiant floor heating, just like the pioneers always dreamed.
Darkly hilarious, “The Annie Year” (Unnamed Press 2016) is set in a small town in Northeast Iowa where local CPA Tandy Caide embarks on a journey of self-discovery. An affair with the beguiling new vocational agriculture teacher, her slovenly husband’s mental breakdown, and meth labs that keep blowing up are just the beginning.
Geoff Herbach’s “Stupid Fast” is about a boy, sports and being a serious dork. It’s about bullying and the opposite. It’s about a girl, hair growth, a little brother and piano. It’s about a depressed mother. It’s about learning to be who you are and not hiding.
In addition to Ash and Herbach’s evening visit to Dragonfly Books, Herbach will join Decorah High School students during the day to talk about writing, growing up in a small town and doing creative
