Green Iowa AmeriCorps, in a partnership with the Winneshiek Energy District and The Center for Sustainable Communities at Luther College, will be showing a Ken Burns six-part documentary in January.

The film being shown is “The National Parks: America’s Best Idea.”

The screening is at Luther College in Valders room 362. This event is free to the public and childcare will be provided during the time of the movie so families are encouraged to come.

The childcare also will consist of a National Park-themed activity.

About the film
Created in 2009, this film looks back at the history of the parks and why they were created, it also covers more contemporary issues such as how to best care for and use this historic land.

The film starts in the mid-1800s and follows the history nearly 150 years to modern times.

The documentary is broken into chapters that focus on different time periods in the history of the National Park System.

This series will start Wednesday, Jan. 10, at 6:30 p.m., showing “The Scripture of Nature.” “The Last Refuge” will show Sunday, Jan. 14, at 2 p.m. “The Empire of Grandeur” will show Wednesday, Jan. 17, at 6:30 p.m. “Going Home” will show Sunday, Jan. 21, at 2 p.m. “Great Nature” will show Wednesday, Jan. 24, at 6:30 p.m. “The Morning of Creation” will show Sunday, Jan. 28, at 2 p.m.

Everyone is encouraged to come and learn more about the history and triumph that is the National Park System.
