A partial restoration project recently was completed to the Burr Oak Savings Bank, part of the Laura Ingalls Wilder Park and Museum in Burr Oak. The bank houses the Museum’s offices and gift shop. The bank’s tuckpointing has been redone as the roof cap of the building was starting to cave in and mortar between the bricks was eroding. Custom Brick & Stone Co. of Keokuk, which specializes in restoration of historical buildings, was hired for the job. Three parapets had to be rebuilt, copper caps were custom made around the entire building to replace crumbling clay caps, and deteriorated mortar was tuckpointed with historically accurate mortar. Members of the Custom Brick and Stone Crew are pictured above, from left: Johnathan West, Marcus West and Eric Ash.
