Luther College alumna, Sue Rothmeyer '81, has been elected secretary of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America by the 2019 ELCA Churchwide Assembly.

Previously, Rothmeyer served as executive for administration with the Office of the Secretary. When asked about her new position, Rothmeyer said, "I’m grateful to the church for entrusting me with this new sense of vocation, and I covet the prayers and support of people across this church as I assume these new responsibilities Nov. 1."

Originally from Calmar, Iowa, Rothmeyer received her bachelor's from Luther College in 1981 and has maintained close ties to the college over the years. She currently serves as the ELCA representative to the Luther College Board of Regents, spoke at the English department's annual gathering and for the Heritage Club dinner three years ago, served on a panel at Luther's celebration commemorating the 500th anniversary of the Reformation and takes part in alumni activities in the Chicago area.

Thinking back to her time at Luther and how it shaped her faith, Rothmeyer said, "My decision to major in English at Luther College was influenced not only by the words I heard from professors in the classroom, but in their witness to the Word as part of their daily presence in chapel. My four years at Luther College were, as the mission statement hopes, a time of embracing diversity, being challenged to learn in community, discerning my calling, and being encouraged to serve for the common good."
