Multiple charges were filed after a Saturday traffic stop on Highway 52 in Calmar Township at about 12:40 a.m.
According to the Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy attempted to stop a vehicle driven by Dale Smerud, 55, Decorah, who failed to stop his vehicle and fled from the deputy.
During a short pursuit, Smerud turned down a dead-end alley and was apprehended. His passenger, Tauren Gess, 37, Calmar, fled on foot. Gess was located a short time later hiding under the deck of a nearby residence.
Smerud was arrested and booked into the Winneshiek County Jail for operating while under the influence of methamphetamine, third-offense possession of a controlled substance, failure to obey a traffic control device, driving with a suspended license and reckless driving.
Gess was arrested and booked into the Winneshiek County Jail for third-offense possession of methamphetamine and marijuana, unlawful possession of prescription drugs, interference with official acts and open container.
