Winneshiek Medical Center and Mayo Clinic Health System are pleased to welcome Orthopedic Surgeon Rick Wilkerson, D.O., to Decorah Clinic.

Dr. Wilkerson will begin seeing patients and performing surgeries at Winneshiek Medical Center in September 2019.

Dr. Wilkerson is an experienced, proven orthopedic surgeon who has special interest in joint replacements and sports medicine surgical care. He performs hip, knee and shoulder replacements, all sports medicine procedures including ACL reconstruction surgery, pediatric orthopedic surgery, hand procedures, fracture repair and more. The Winneshiek Medical Center orthopedic practice is supported by the latest in MRI technology, quality skilled care for recovery and the most specialized physical and occupational therapy practice in the region for successful rehabilitation.

Dr. Wilkerson comes to Winneshiek Medical Center after 30-plus years building a successful practice in Spencer.

“The opportunity at Winneshiek Medical Center is the perfect fit at this stage of my career,” he says. “I can continue to provide orthopedic care while reducing the administrative responsibilities of my previous practice. I look forward to expanding orthopedic services to the people in this region, and offering quality surgical care locally.”

Dr. Wilkerson is a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. and the College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery in Des Moines. His orthopedic surgery training was completed at Fitzsimmons Army Medical Center in Aurora, Colo. Along with academic appointments, he served as chief of orthopedic surgery in Fort Hood, Texas before joining Northwest Iowa Bone, Joint and Sports Surgeons in 1989 in Spencer. He is certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery.

In addition to local orthopedic care, Dr. Wilkerson has spent a great deal of his career traveling to provide care and develop programming through Orthopedic Overseas. Through this program, he served in Afghanistan in 1991, 1993 and 2003, Bhutan in 1995 and 2006, Cambodia in 1997, Vietnam in 2001 and in Uganda in 2005. He has also served through the International Medical Corps and Medical Alliance for Iraq every year from 2004-2015. His most current overseas work is through a foundation he and his wife, Barbara, began in 2011 called “Love Takes Root” in Port Au Prince and Jacmel, Haiti.
