The trial for the man accused of killing Barquin Arozamena, a former Iowa State University golf star, will not be held in Decorah.
Arozamena, the 2018 Big 12 conference women’s golf champion and Iowa State Female Athlete of the Year, was found dead with multiple stab wounds Sept. 17 at Coldwater Golf Links in Ames. Her trial was to be held in Decorah on a change of venue from Story County. However, Collin Richards, 22, who was charged with first-degree murder in connection with Arozamena’s death pleaded guilty Friday.
The trial had been scheduled for Sept. 10. According to the Des Moines Register, Richards was in court Friday for a routine pretrial hearing when he indicated he wanted to plead guilty. He is scheduled to be sentenced Aug. 23. First-degree murder carries a mandatory life sentence without the possibility of parole.
