Kim Kolaas, 60, of Calmar, died Friday, Aug. 15, at his home. Services were at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 19, at Springfield Lutheran Church in Decorah, with Pastor Phillip Olson officiating. Organist was Lorraine Meyer. Guitarist was Larry Geiselhart. Hymns were “Lift High the Cross,” “Beautiful Savior” and “I Love to Tell the Story.” Solo was “What Wondrous Love Is This” (Pastor Phillip Olson). Other music was “Okie from Muskogee” and “House of the Rising Sun.”Arrangements were handled by Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, Decorah. Casket bearers were Michael Reinhartt, Jerry Brockway, Michael Meine, Justin Kuennen, Michael Neal, Kevin Kepros, Tyler Brandel, Martin Timp and Ron Casperson. Honorary casket bearers were all of Kim’s nieces and nephews: Brad "Hairbutt" Harris, Jim Boyl William, "Rusty" Newman, Mark Simmons, Ronald Frye, Lester Timp, Delbert Hageman, Steven Hageman, Michael Hageman and Stacy Bland. Interment was at Springfield Cemetery in Decorah.

Kim Arnold Kolaas was born Aug. 29, 1953, the son of Kenneth and Christine (Johnson) Kolaas in Decorah. Kim attended South Winneshiek Schools and Postville High School, graduating in 1971. Kim worked for Pattison Brothers in Clayton at the grain elevator and for Double L in Garnavillo and Monona, building hog confinements. He was united in marriage to Renee Frye May 20, 1988, in Clayton, and they were the parents of Kristopher. Kim also worked for Hank Berns Electric in Garnavillo and more recently as a handyman in the Northeast Iowa area. He also fished commercially in Clayton. Throughout the years, Kim loved to fish and ride his Harley. His mind was always full of ideas and enjoyed tinkering with things all his life. He enjoyed playing guitar and refurbished one for him to play.

Kim is survived by his son, Kristopher Kolaas and friend Petronella “Peach” Lusthoff, St. Olaf; his former wife, Renee Frye Kolaas, Garnavillo; his mother, Chris Kolaas, Calmar; one sister, Sherry (Leon) Bacheldor, Calmar; two brothers, Steven (Carolin) Kolaas, Tripoli and Scott (Melissa) Kolaas, Ankeny; nieces and nephews: Kelly (Allie) Bacheldor, Korey (Kaela) Bacheldor, Dustin (Kayla) Kolaas, Kayci Kolaas, Zachary Kolaas, Tyler Kolaas, Kaiya Kriener, Kara (fiancé Kerry Kleve) Hageman, Kiri McLaughlin and Kodie Smith; seven great-nieces and -nephews: Ava and Maddisen Kolaas, Emma and Grace Bacheldor, Karter Kriener, Savannah O’Reilly and Riley McLaughlin; special friend, Tami Hageman, Calmar; brother-in-law, Daryl Schmitt, Fort Atkinson; along with many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Kim was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth Kolaas, Feb. 26, 2005, two sisters, Linda Kolaas in 1955 and Robyn Kolaas Hageman Schmitt Dec. 17, 2008; one nephew, Kamon Chapman, in 1993; sister-in-law, Theresa Kolaas, in 2001; nephew-in-law, Pete Kriener, in 2013; paternal grandparents, Arnold and Thelma Kolaas; maternal grandparents, Christian Johnson and Bernard and Signe Ehler; and many aunts and uncles.
