Lois Mae Thompson, 84, of Decorah, died Sunday, June 15, 2014, at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home in Decorah. Services were at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 18, at First Lutheran Church in Decorah, with Rev. Chad Huebner officiating. Organist was Marcia Engebretson. Soloist was Tonya Tollefsrud (“Away in the Manger,” “On Eagle’s Wings” and “In the Garden”). Hymns were “Here I Am, Lord” and “Beautiful Savior.” Interment was at Phelps Cemetery in Decorah. Arrangements were handled by Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah. Honorary casket bearers were all of Lois Mae’s grandchildren. Casket bearers were Darrin Walter, Justin Starkey, Dan Walter, Nicholas Thompson, Willie Thompson, Scott Thompson, Dennis Wilhelm, Dale Wilhelm and Rodney Wilhelm.
Lois Mae (Woolridge) Thompson was born October 24, 1929, the daughter of Louis and Myrtle (Fretheim) Woolridge, near Decorah. Lois was baptized Nov. 17, 1929, and confirmed May 14, 1944, at the Madison Lutheran Church. Lois attended and graduated from Ridgeway High School in 1949. She was united in marriage to Ernest “Ernie” Thompson June 5, 1949, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Lois worked at Luther College as a custodian for 26 years. Lois loved taking care of her family and was always baking and cooking and making sure that they were well fed. Lois was a kind, quiet person who enjoyed doing embroidery, cross-stitching and playing cards. Her favorite time of the year was Christmas and enjoyed getting gifts for everyone as well as gathering all of the family. Lois treasured her family and grandchildren and enjoyed going places with Ernie; especially to the family table restaurant. Lois was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Decorah.
Lois Mae is survived by her four children: Wanda (Erlin) Walter, Decorah; Daryl (Nolan Moyer) Thompson, Easton, Pa.; Dean (Sue) Thompson, Mabel, Minn.; and Jeff (Denise) Thompson, Dubuque; grandchildren: Darrin Walter, Dan (Mollie) Walter, Tina (Bruce) Michels, Tonya (Adam) Tollefsrud, Michele (Justin) Birdsell, Erica (Mitch) Hanson, Nicholas (Abbie) Thompson, Willie (Regina) Thompson, Melissa (Chad) Driscoll, Hannah Kafar, Mike (Laurie) Farrell, Tony Farrell, Sandy Farrell, Paul Farrell, Will Farrell and 33 great grandchildren; four sisters-in-law: Jeanette Wilhem, Mesa, Ariz., Beverly Starkey, Waterloo, Phyllis Thompson, Decorah and Margaret “Cookie” Thompson, Calmar; along with many nieces and nephews.
Lois Mae was preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Myrtle (Fretheim) Woolridge; her husband, Ernest Thompson, Feb. 7, 2014; one grandson, Mickey Thompson, July 29, 2000; her father- and mother-in-law, Benjamin and Amanda (Albertson) Thompson; four brothers-in-law: Stanley Thompson, Melvin Thompson, Einer Thompson and Melvin Wilhelm; one sister-in-law, Alice Thompson.
