Lester E. Allen, age 98, of Decorah, died Sunday, June 29, 2014 at the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah.
Lester was born July 6, 1915 in Spring Grove, Minn., to John Thomas and Emma (Forde) Allen.
He attended the Grindeland School near Hesper. He was married to Lillian Newgard, and they later divorced.
He farmed in the Riceford, Minn., and in the Hesper areas and later did carpentry work. He enjoyed working with horses, making homemade toys, and attending Hesper-Mabel Steam Engine Days. He could play several different instruments and was fascinated with all types of machines.
Lester is survived by a son-in-law, Arlan Forde of Decorah; two granddaughters: Arlene (Rick) Boynton of Eyota, Minn., and Audrey (Larry) Cleveland of Lime Springs; great grandchildren: Bryce, Bryant, Brandon, and Ben Boynton, Brianna McClintock, Dustin Klimesh, and Chrysta Steinlage; his step-great grandchildren: Heather Alden, Brad Boynton, Eric Boynton, and Dave Cleveland; and by 18 great great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Marjorie Forde; by his parents; and by his two brothers Irvin and Vernon, and three sisters: Bernice Henningsgaard, Esther Henningsgaard, and Doris Newgard.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, July 5, at the Hesper Lutheran Church in Hesper, with the Rev. Matt Larson officiating. Burial will be in the Hesper Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be held from noon until the time of services on Saturday at the church.
