MARY O’BRIEN, 97, of Decorah, died early Monday morning, May 12, 2014, at the Wellington Place Nursing Home in Decorah. Mass of Christian Burial is at 10:30 a.m., Friday, May 16, at St. Benedict Catholic Church, 307 West Main Street, Decorah, with Rev. Phil Gibbs presiding. Burial is in St. Bridget’s Catholic Cemetery, Bluffton. Friends may call from 9:30-10:30 a.m., at the church Friday morning. The Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah is handling arrangements. Although Mary did not have children of her own, she was an important aunt to 14 nephews and nieces, a part of each of their lives, as well of the lives of their families. Mary is survived by her Decorah family, including her sister Lucille’s son, Dave Kelly, who died in 2000; his wife Katie, and their children: Mike (Lori) Kelly, Kris (John) Nystul and Mary Beth (Jon) Heibeisen; Rose Breitsprecher’s two sons, Tim (Jeannie) Breitsprecher, Mabel, Minn. and Tom (Suzie) Breitsprecher, Brandon, FL. Her Rock Island nieces and nephews are the children of Mary’s sister, Helen Carolan: Raymond Carolan, Seattle, Wash., Charles Carolan, (deceased Denver, Colo.), Rosalyn (Keith) Bell, Tallahassee, Fla., Ruth (Louie) Orwitz, Rock Island, Ill., Eunice (Vince) McGuire Rockford, Ill. and Mary Ellen (Richard) Kuhlman, Darien, Ill.; long with several great-nieces and great-great-nieces and -nephews.
