Naomi Frana, 88, of Calmar, died Friday, March, 14, 2014, at the Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah. Mass of Christian Burial was at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 18, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar, with Rev. Donald Hawes officiating. Organist was Jeanette Dietzenbach. Cantor was Dan Silhacek. St. Aloysius Choir sang “Here I am, Lord,” “Taste and See,” “Ave Maria,” “Goin’ Home” and “On Eagle’s Wings.” Lectors were Greg Frana, Erin Frana and Kristi Einhorn. Eucharistic ministers were Kathy and Ryan Becker. Offertory gift bearers were Sydney Becker, Connor Frana and Aiden Einhorn. Casket bearers were Ryan Becker, Kelly Frana, Jeff Einhorn, Gregory Frana, Daniel Moss, Jake Raynor, Daniel Frana, Doug Groux and Linus Schwemer. Interment was at St. Aloysius Catholic Cemetery in Calmar. Arrangements were handled by Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, French Chapel, Calmar. 

Naomi Valaska (Houdek) Frana was born Aug. 23, 1925, the daughter of Frederick and Margaret (Meyer) Houdek, in Fort Atkinson. Naomi attended Catholic School in Calmar and graduated from Calmar High School in 1943. After high school, Naomi worked for the FBI in Washington, D.C. for one year. She returned home and married Richard Frana Sept. 6, 1944, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar and they were married for almost 70 years. Naomi was an excellent housekeeper, a wonderful cook, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She enjoyed traveling, hosting large family dinners, volunteering at the Winneshiek Medical Center and participating in the neighborhood ladies club. Naomi particularly enjoyed spring, especially watching the newborn animals. She took great enjoyment in watching and caring for the birds that inhabited her yard, and in caring for her farm cats that loved and trusted only her. For all of her life Naomi was a woman of strong and unwavering faith, and was devoted to the rosary, which she prayed daily. She showered her entire family with her constant love. Naomi was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church, the Rosary Society and the Catholic Daughters of America.

Naomi is survived by her husband, Richard Frana, of Calmar; three sons: Gary (Lois) Frana of Calmar, Fritz (Mary “Cece”) Frana of Lakeville, Minn. and Mark (Lesley) Frana of Delmar, Md.; grandchildren: Kelly (Brenda) Frana, Kathy (Ryan) Becker, Kristi (Jeff) Einhorn, Greg (Toni) Frana, Erin Frana, Kathleen (Daniel) Moss, Ryann (Jacob) Raynor and Daniel Frana; 12 great-grandchildren: Connor and Bailee Frana, Sydney, Gabby, Annika and Elliot Becker, Aidan, Lance, Trystan and Wyatt Einhorn, Ellie and Presley Frana, and a Moss great-grandchild due in April; one sister, Julie (Cullen) Schwemer of Winona, Minn.; sisters- and brothers-in-law: Francis O’Brien of Cedar Rapids, Rita (Bud) Jirak of Little Turkey, Richard Groux of Austin, Texas,  Rose Frana of Calmar and Sandy Frana of Decorah.

Naomi was preceded in death by her son, Danny, Aug. 26, 1967; and daughter, Patricia Frana, Oct. 20, 2012; her parents, Frederick and Margaret (Meyer) Houdek; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Stephen and Frances Frana; two sisters, Rosemary Groux and Germaine Izydorek; brothers- and sisters-in-law: Joseph Izydorek, Walter Frana, Raymond and Alice Frana, Mildred and Wilmer Poshusta, Marcella and Vernon Lee, Steven Frana, Robert Frana and Gene O’Brien.
