Shirley Ann Johnson, 78, died Monday, March 24, 2014, at Aase Haugen Home in Decorah. Visitation begins at 1 p.m. one hour before the service at the church Friday. Funeral services are at 2 p.m. Friday, March 28, at Decorah Lutheran Church in Decorah, with Rev. Dave Sorenson and Rev. Bryan Robertson officiating. Organist is Kathy Murray. Congregational hymns are “How Great Thou Art,” “Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone)” and “The Old Rugged Cross.” Special music is “Come to Jesus” (CD). Casket bearers are Ryan Coffey, Joseph Coffey, Matthew Coffey and Charlie Coffey. Interment is at Lutheran Cemetery in Decorah. Arrangements are being handled by Fjelstul Funeral Home, Decorah.

Shirley was born May 9, 1935, in Waukon, to Elmer and Emma (Bechtel) Snitker, the youngest of 11 children. She was baptized Sept. 11, 1935, and confirmed Easter Sunday, March 28, 1948, at Zalmona Presbyterian Church, rural Waukon. She was a 1953 graduate of Waukon High School and received her surgical tech degree from NICC in Calmer.

Shirley was married to Donald Johnson Jan. 25, 1964, in Prosper, Minn. She worked as a surgical tech at Decorah Hospital for 30 years and was active in ladies groups at Decorah Lutheran Church. She also was a homemaker and enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.
Shirley is survived by her husband, Donald; one daughter, Debra (Charlie) Coffey; three grandsons:  Ryan Coffey of Boston, Mass., Joseph and Matthew Coffey of Decorah; one sister, Marion Wirkler of Winona, Minn.; and by numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; seven brothers: Irvin, Lawrence, Walter, Merlin, Robert, James and Ben; two sisters, Arlene Deeny and Gert Hangartner.
