Sitting No. 10 in the preseason rankings in Class 4A, the Decorah softball team (0-1, 0-1 NEIC) hit a roadblock in No. 6 Charles City Monday night on the road in the season opener, 10-3.

After the Lady Vikes got on the board with runs in the top of the first and second innings, before the Comets hit their stride, pushing five runs over home plate in the bottom of the second. Charles City stretched its lead with four more runs in the third while keeping Decorah off the board until a solo run scored in the sixth frame. 

Leading Decorah in the batter’s box was Ellie Luzum with two hits, including a double. Avery Shelton also connected for a double. Other hits were gathered by Cora Syverson, Lydia Ihde, Abigail Milburn and Isabel Ihde. 

Suffering the loss was Shelton in her six innings in the pitcher’s circle, allowing 10 runs on nine hits and four walks, while striking out two.

Decorah hosted Waverly-Shell Rock Wednesday night — full results will be published in the Tuesday, June 23, Driftless Journal. It will be a road contest Friday, June 19, for the Lady Vikes at Waukon at 5:30 p.m. Competition begins next week with a visit from Oelwein Monday, June 22, at 5:30 p.m. in a junior varsity and varsity twinbill.
