As last week came to a close the Decorah softball team (8-8, 5-6 NEIC), faced off with several top opponents.

Defensive battle

The Vikings locked horns with Crestwood Thursday, falling on the wrong side of a 1-0 ballgame.

“The girls played a fantastic game. The outcome may not have been what we were hoping for, but a one-run game can go either way. These girls have been working hard to prepare for the second round on conference play and are looking forward to getting another chance at each team in the conference.”

Decorah was held to two hits, both singles by Ellie Luzum and Avery Shelton, while holding the Cadets to four hits.

In the pitcher’s circle, Shelton allowed four hits and fanned nine batters over six innings.

W-SR Tourney

It was a nice day Saturday for a softball tourney and the Vikings looked to gather momentum, going 1-2 at the Waverly-Sell Rock Tournament.

The first game saw Decorah best Iowa Falls-Alden (4-14), 15-2 in five innings. The Vikings plated two runs in both the second and fourth frames; however, it was the big five-run third and six-run fifth innings that pushed Decorah past Iowa Falls-Alden.

Emma Johnson got the win, going the five innings, allowing two hits and striking out four.

At the plate, Isabel Ihde was 4-for-4 with two doubles, seven RBI and two stolen bases. Ellie Luzum and Cora Syverson provided two singles each.

Game two was Decorah’s for the taking versus Class 2A No. 6 Jesup (15-4), as the Vikings close to claiming the “W”, falling 8-7.

The J-Hawks struck first with three runs in the second, adding a run in the third, fourth and fifth. The Vikings smacked out a six-run fourth frame, leaving the score knotted 6-6 with two frames remaining. Decorah drove in a run in the top of the sixth to take a short-lived lead before Jesup struck for two runs in the bottom half of the frame. The Vikings had one more chance to score but came up empty.

Decorah managed five hits — a home run by Shelton, a double by Bryar Duwe and singles by Cora Syverson, Lydia Ihde and I. Ihde.

Maddie Clement and Shelton both took the mound.

Fatigue set in for Decorah as it faced its third opponent of the day in Cedar Falls (10-13). The Vikings fell 8-0, garnering three hits.

Providing singles for the Vikes were Ella Kittelson, Duwe and Shelton.

Stepping into the pitcher’s circle for Decorah were Madison Tollefson, Shelton and Clement.
