A pair of conference wins are in the book for the Decorah baseball team who opened the season Tuesday night at Crestwood. The Vikings controlled the contests, winning 8-4 and 13-3.

“We are extremely excited to get the 2020 season of to a good start. Offensively, we had many very well managed at-bats from everyone tonight.  This allowed us to have some nice innings in which we manufactured runs as well as drove in runs with some timely hits,” said Coach Adam Riley. “Defensively, when given an opportunity by our pitchers to make plays, we did a very nice job of catching and throwing the ball. As expected, given the sudden start to the season, we still have opportunities to grow from a pitching standpoint. We were not as sharp on the mound as we will be by the end of the season, but this was to be expected, given the short time to prepare both physically and mentally for the season.”

In game one, the Cadets struck first with a run in the opening frame before a pair of back-to-back singles by Brody Young and James Marx put Viking runners on the base paths and eventually two runs. A walk issued to Cael Luzum in the third inning led to Decorah’s third run of the game. Crestwood came back with a tally of its own in the fourth before the Vikings posted five more runs in the closing frames to seal the win.

Earning the win on the mound was Luzum with nine strikeouts and two hits in six innings of work. Climbing the hill in relief were Tyler Thompson and Briggs Duwe.

Decorah hammered out eight hits in the contest with Seth Shindelar, Young and Marx each beating out two.

Game two was a five-inning affair as the Vikings put runners on the bases time and time again, starting with four runs in the first. Scoring in each of the second, third and fourth frames, Decorah rang up 13 runs before allowing Crestwood got on the board with two runners scoring in the fourth and one in the fifth.

Shindelar struck out two runners and walked two batters during his time on the mound, with Marx throwing in relief.

In all, Decorah strung together nine hits, led by Keenan Tyler’s two singles. Also, reaching base on hits were Duwe, Shindelar, Gunnar Steine, Tyler Thompson, Andrew Magner and Young. With a pair of RBI each were Steine, Young and Marx.

“It has been a great experience to be able to play games for all levels of baseball and softball the last two days and have people show up and safely support our student athletes,” concluded Coach Riley.
