Local businesswoman and Decorah native Kate Rattenborg is the new owner of Master’s Touch, Decorah’s Christian book and gift store. She recently purchased the business from Shari Brink of Waukon.

“It is important to keep our main street retail businesses strong” stated Rattenborg. “Master’s Touch has a loyal customer base, and I’m appreciative of the opportunity to own and manage this business in addition to Decorah’s indie bookstore, Dragonfly Books.”

Brink made the decision to sell the business in order that she can spend more time with her growing family.

“I am so excited that Kate is the new owner. The retail knowledge and experience that she brings to Master’s Touch is a true gift, and I look forward to the great things she will do, not only for Master’s Touch, but for downtown Decorah as a whole.”

Rattenborg has no immediate plans to make major changes to the business. Long-time employee Cheryl Bollman will be continuing with the business, as well as Mary Grube, a more recent addition to the staff. Bollman has been with Master’s Touch through all previous owners, and Rattenborg is delighted that both Bollman and Grube will remain. Rattenborg plans to have her staff from Dragonfly Books cross-trained, so you may be seeing some familiar faces in both of the stores.

“I will be relying on the expertise of our long-time employees to help me absorb the differences in running the two separate, yet related, businesses. I will be splitting my time between the two stores, and I look forward to meeting new customers, and continuing the mission of Master’s Touch.”

Rattenborg is investigating ways Master’s Touch can have an integral impact in the community. She plans to create space for discussion groups, Bible study, book groups and drop-in conversation and fellowship.

“My staff and I want to provide a safe and comfortable spot for the community.”

Master’s Touch will continue having a presence at regional conferences and educational events.

Brink purchased Master’s Touch from Carolyn and Del Fure in 2013, who had purchased the business 24 years earlier from Roberta (Melaas) Blekeberg.

“It has been a great experience owning Master’s Touch and being part of downtown Decorah for the past five plus years. I am so thankful for great employees and all the wonderful customers who made this possible. Support from family and friends has been an incredible blessing as well. Thank you to all who were part of this journey with me.”
