Decorah graduates Leah Broderick, Devon Hovey, Randi-Kate Canoy, Devin Gilbertson and Sam Zook have been honored with postseason awards as members of the Luther College track and field team.
Broderick was named Co-Most Valuable Performer for Field Events/Multi-Events, sharing the honor with senior Amanda Dunn.
Broderick set an Iowa Conference and school record in the heptathlon at the IIAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships. She posted a point total of 4,818, breaking the old league record of 4,813 set by Lindsay Schultz of Central College in 2004. She also earned all-conference honors placing third in both the high jump and javelin. For her efforts, she was named the league’s MVP for field events for the second year in a row. She went on to qualify for the NCAA III National Outdoor Championships, where she placed 12th.
Randi-Kate Canoy was named Rookie of the Year, an annual award presented to a first-year track athlete and selected by her teammates.
Broderick and Hovey were named captains for the 2014-15 season. Hovey capped off her 2013-14 campaign earning all-conference honors at the IIAC Outdoor Championships, placing second in the 3,000 steeplechase.
On the men’s side, Sam Zook was presented the Breakout Award, and Devin Gilbertson was presented the Coaches Appreciation Award. The Breakout Award is presented to the athlete who showed the greatest improvement either from last season or from January through May. The Coaches Appreciation Award is presented to the athlete who the coaches feel has contributed the most for the betterment of the team.
