University of Iowa senior linebacker and Decorah native Josey Jewell, along with senior offensive lineman Sean Welsh and junior offensive lineman James Daniels, have earned preseason All-America from Athlon Sports.
The All-America teams were announced Tuesday.
Jewell is atop Athlon’s linebacker list, being named to the first-team defense while Welsh was recognized on the third-team offense and Daniels is on the fourth-team offense as a center.
Jewell (6’2”, 236-pounds) has previously been named to the Lott IMPACT Trophy preseason Watch List. He ranks 18th in career tackles with 301 and has started 30 consecutive games over the past three seasons.
He was second in the Big Ten in tackles last year with 124. For his efforts, he was named fourth team All-America by Phil Steele, SB Nation and Athlon Sports and was one of five finalists for the Butkus Award. He was named a permanent team captain last season and was the Most Valuable Player for defense. He was named academic All-Big Ten for the third straight year and was second team All-Big Ten by the Associated Press, Big Ten Coaches and Media, Athlon Sports and Phil Steele.
Iowa opens the 2017 season Sept. 2, hosting Wyoming in the first of seven home games in Kinnick Stadium.
Jewell is the son of Bobby and Paula Jewell.
