Decorah's Mallory Broderick was one of nine members of the 2012 Luther College softball team named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Scholar Athletes.

This award is annually released by the NFCA at the end of October.

To achieve this honor, a student-athlete must have obtained a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 or above on a 4.0 scale at the conclusion of the 2011-12 academic year.

The 2012 NFCA Scholar Athletes and the class they were in during the 2012 season are seniors Mallory Broderick (Decorah), Paige Comentino (Nora Springs), and Kelsey Kittleson (St. Ansgar); juniors Shari Huber (Eldrige) and Elisa Smith (Mounds View, Minn.); sophomores Kelsey Bies (Maple Grove, Minn.), Becca Girvan (Maple Grove, Minn.) and Kayla Hatting (LeMars); and freshman Kelsey Rose (Bettendorf).

The 2012 campaign proved to be another outstanding season for the Norse softball team. For the third time in as many years, Luther qualified for the NCAA III National Championships. The Norse finished fifth at the national finale, completing the year with a record of 41-9 that included a 15-1 mark in the Iowa Conference and a seventh league title.  Luther has now posted three consecutive seasons with 40-plus victories and just capped off the best four-year record in school history with a total of 159-33.
