Area athletic teams are taking aim at the bigger things as the postseason contests are get under way. 

Girls’ basketball

The Decorah girls’ basketball team will travel to take on Independence in the opening round of the Class 4A Region 3, Wednesday, Feb. 13, at 7 p.m. The winner will face Mason City Saturday, Feb. 16, at 7 p.m. in Mason City. The regional final is Tuesday, Feb. 19, at the highest remaining seed. Teams on the other side of the bracket are Boone, Perry and Gilbert.

South Winn is in Class 2A, competing in Region 4. The Warriors battle Postville in the first round Saturday, Feb. 9, at 7 p.m. in Calmar. The winner goes on to face MFL MarMac Tuesday, Feb. 12, in Monona, beginning at 7 p.m. The regional semifinal is Friday, Feb. 15, at 7 p.m. in Cascade against Cascade, Belle Plaine or Lisbon. The regional final is Monday, Feb. 18, at 7 p.m. at Dubuque Senior.

Turkey Valley is in Class 1A, Region 2. The Trojans will play West Central in the first round Thursday, Feb. 7, at 7 p.m. in Jackson Junction. If the Trojans surpass the Blue Devils they will compete in the quarterfinals Tuesday, Feb. 12, at 7 p.m. in Waukon against Kee. The regional semifinals are Friday, Feb. 15, at 7 p.m. in West Union, against Nashua-Plainfield, North Butler or Tripoli. The regional final is Monday, Feb. 18 in West Union. Teams on the other side of the bracket are Clarksville, Rockford, Riceville, Bishop Garrigan, Northwood-Kensett, Newman Catholic and North Iowa.

The state tournament runs Monday, Feb. 25 through Saturday, March 2, in Des Moines.


Area wrestling teams began the road to state last week at sectionals. The top two grapplers in each weight division advanced to Saturday’s districts meet. 

Decorah has four wrestlers still seeking a state berth — Austin Wilkins (106), Jackson Rolfs (132), Dawson Palmer (182) and Andy Murphy (195). The Vikings will compete Saturday at 12 p.m. at Independence in the Class 2A District 5 meet.

Three Warriors will look to punch their tickets to the state wrestling tournament including Ethan Maldonado (106), Philip French (113) and Logan Schnuelle (152) at Denver Saturday at 12 p.m. in the Class 1A District 1 meet.

The state wrestling meet runs Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 14-16, at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.


It all counts Tuesday, Feb. 12, as the Vikings look to qualify for state.

Decorah is in Class 2A and will host the District 1 co-ed state-qualifying bowling meet at Oneota Lanes beginning at 12 p.m. Other teams in the district are Western Dubuque (Epworth), Marion, Waterloo East, Waverly-Shell Rock and West Delaware.

The first-place team from each district automatically advances to state. In addition, three teams earn at-large bids based on the highest pin count of the remaining teams from all five joint qualifying meets. Athletes can also advance as an individual. The state-qualifying individual champion will advance from each state-qualifying tournament along with the next five highest pin total (based on the two individual game scores) statewide. There will be a minimum of 12 individual qualifiers from each class. All ties will qualify.

The state bowling tournament for Class 2A will be held at Cadillac Lanes in Waterloo Tuesday, Feb. 19, at 10 a.m.

Class 1A boys

South Winn and Turkey Valley boys are both in Class 1A.

The Warriors are in District 5 and will face MFL MarMac in the quarterfinals Thursday, Feb. 14, at 6:30 p.m. at Dunkerton. The winner will face either Kee, Starmont or Dunkerton Tuesday, Feb. 19, at 8 p.m. at Dunkerton in the semifinals. The district final is Thursday, Feb. 21, at 7 p.m. at Oelwein. Teams on the other side of the bracket include East Buchanan, Waterloo Christian, Don Bosco, Wapsie Valley and Postville. The substate final is Saturday, Feb. 23, at Clear Lake at 7 p.m.

Turkey Valley is in District 4. The Trojans will do battle with Nashua-Plainfield in the quarterfinals Thursday, Feb. 14, at 6:30 p.m. at Saint Ansgar. The district semifinal is Tuesday, Feb. 19, at 8 p.m. at Rockford against either North Butler, Riceville or Rockford. The district final is set for Thursday, Feb. 21, at New Hampton at 7 p.m. Teams on the other side of the bracket are Janesville, Clarksville, West Central Saint Ansgar and Tripoli. The substate final is Saturday, Feb. 23, at 6:30 p.m. at West Delaware.

Decorah boys

Playoff pairings for Class 3A boys has not been announced yet. The first date the boys could play is Monday, Feb. 18. Teams in Decorah’s bracket are Algona, Charles City, Clear Lake, Hampton-Dumont/CAL, Iowa Falls-Alden, Waverly-Shell Rock and Webster City.
