Decorah’s Carston Baumler was chosen to compete in the annual Shrine Bowl in July.

Decorah’s Carston Baumler will be among 92 of Iowa’s most talented pre-college football players for the 47th annual Iowa Shrine Bowl Saturday, July 20, at 4 p.m.

The Viking will represent the north team for the contest, to be played at the UNI Dome in Cedar Falls.

Baumler was a First-Team All-District player his junior and senior seasons and named to the Coaches Association and Des Moines Register All-State Team Third Team. He played tight end and defensive end for the Vikings. During his senior campaign he had 43 tackles including 19.5 for a loss. He also caught two touchdown passes.

Off the gridiron, Baumler participated in basketball for two years and track for three years. He is a member of Silver Chord, and was an Academic All-District Team member with a 3.47 GPA. Carston future plans include earning a certificate as a construction equipment operator,  CDLA, and welding.

“We are very proud to have Carston selected to represent Decorah for the annual Shrine Game. He is an excellent football player and even better young man. This and his caring, generous nature and strong work ethic make him an outstanding representative for Decorah, the Shriners and young people who need the services of the Shrine Hospitals,” said Viking Head Coach Pat Trewin.

The Iowa Shrine Bowl Game is an all-star football game between selected pre-college football athletes on each side of a north-south dividing line in Iowa.

The players are selected by a process of nomination by coaches, balloting by statewide sports media professionals and official invitation from a representative of the Iowa Shrine Bowl.

Beyond the competition, the annual event is held as a benefit for The Shriner’s Hospital for Children® and has raised more than $2.6 million. The Shriner’s hospitals provide medical care for children suffering from orthopedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries and cleft lip and palate.

Carston is the son of Gary and Denise Baumler.
