With the regular season winding down, Decorah girls’ basketball team (10-9, 4-7 NEIC) traveled to battle Waukon (13-8, 7-5 NEIC), falling 53-42.

The Vikings came out firing to claim an 18-11 advantage after the first period. In the second, the Indian offense came alive to outscore Decorah 14-10 and take the 29-27 lead into the locker room. The Vikings kept within striking distance in the third frame, but could not grab the momentum they needed to mount a comeback.

“This was a hard-fought battle for third place in the conference and a good learning experience,” said Coach Shannon Quandahl. “We have to continue moving forward and be prepared for our last conference game against Charles City.”

Bryar Duwe was strong for the Vikes, scoring 19 points to lead the way. Emma Nierengarten was in double figures with 15 points. Also contributing to Decorah’s score were Kylie O’Hara with four points, while Kylah Quandahl and Haley Gossman put in two each.

The Lady Vikes will conclude the regular season as hosts to Charles City Friday, Feb. 14, at 6:15 p.m.
