The Decorah softball team (6-4, 5-4 NEIC) completed the sweep over Waverly-Shell Rock in grand fashion Wednesday night for the first time since June 2008, making it five wins in a row.

The Vikings pulled out a close 10-9 game-one victory before pounding the Go-Hawks, 17-4, in five innings.

“The girls were ready to put their game to the test and came up with two big wins. The girls played hard and showed their determination to continue to fight during game one coming up with a big win in the bottom of the seventh inning,” noted Coach Jill Christofferson.

In game one, Avery Shelton gave Decorah early ammunition from the mound, allowing just one run. In the bottom of the first, Shelton’s grand slam helped her own cause and handed the Vikings an early 5-1 lead. Decorah padded its lead with one run in the third and fifth before giving up three runs in the sixth to W-SR to trail 9-7.

Decorah went to work in the bottom of the sixth to knot the score, 9-9, and shut down the Go-Hawks’ threat in the seventh. In the bottom of the seventh, Katherine Bruening reached on an error. Kallie Mincks stepped onto the diamond to run for Bruening, eventually scoring the game-winning run on an Ella Kittelson single.

Kittelson finished the night going 3-for-4. Shelton had the grand slam and gathered five RBI for Decorah. Ellie Luzum was also strong at the plate at 3-for-4 with a double, two singles and two RBI.

Firing off 11 Ks for the win in the pitcher’s circle was Shelton.

In game two, W-SR struck first with three runs in the opening inning and added one in the fourth. After scoring once in the first inning, Decorah’s offense came alive with four in the third and added six runs in each of the fourth and fifth frames.

It was another solid performance for Kittleson in game two as she went 3-for-3 with a double and RBI. Luzum finished with two hits as well.

The “W” went to southpaw Maddie Clement who allowed four runs on eight hits and struck out three. Shelton threw in one inning of relief.

The Vikings hosted Crestwood Monday and welcomes Turkey Valley to Decorah tonight (Tuesday, June 11) for a junior varsity/varsity doubleheader beginning at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, June 13, Decorah will travel to Crestwood. The busy week concludes Saturday, June 15, at a tournament at Waverly-Shell Rock.
