A solid second half gave the Decorah girls’ basketball team (8-3, 2-3 NEIC) its second conference win of the season, besting Waukon (6-4, 2-3 NEIC) at home Friday night, 33-30.

“We played a great defensive game and maintained discipline for all four quarters,” said Coach Shannon Quandahl. “This was a nice win for the girls and the program moving forward.”

Both squads had a sluggish start to the contest before the Vikings doubled up on Waukon, 8-4, in the first eight minutes. Decorah kept the Indians off the board in the first four minutes of the second frame as it rolled to a 13-8 advantage at halftime.

In the second half, the Viking defense was back on attack, giving up eight points in the third, allowing the Vikes to build a 23-16 lead. The Indians battled back in the fourth quarter to pull within three as Decorah held on for the victory.

Bryar Duwe led Decorah with 13 points, while Emma Nierengarten added seven points. Kylah Quandahl was on the board with six, as Amanda Kuehner provided four. Also scoring for the Lady Vikes were Ambria Pipho with two and Abigail Milburn who knocked down a free throw.

Decorah hosts MFL MarMac Thursday, Jan. 9, at 6:30 p.m. in its lone contest this week.
