Two Luther softball players were recognized by the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
Becca Girvan was named the female athlete of the week while Kelsey Rose was named the position player of the week.
Girvan, a senior pitcher, from Maple Grove, Minn., made four appearances in the circle last week, posting a 3-0 record with a pair of complete-game, 5-inning shutouts, one save and 25 strikeouts in 13 1/3 innings. She opened the week by tossing a no-hitter and striking out nine in a 9-0, 5-inning win over Loras. Girvan also pitched in the nightcap, striking out five and walking two in 2 1/3 innings of relief. In the regular-season finale against Buena Vista, she threw a complete-game 2-hitter with nine strikeouts as Luther won game one, 8-0, in five innings. Girvan then picked up the save in game two, a 4-3 Norse win, striking out two and walking one in one inning of work. She is the daughter of Dan and Gwen Girvan.
Rose, a junior outfielder from Bettendorf, hit .600 (9-of-15) with three doubles, nine RBIs and five runs scored as the Norse swept Loras and Buena Vista and captured the No. 2 seed at this weekend's Iowa Conference tournament. She was a perfect 4-for-4 with a double and two runs scored in the second game against the Duhawks as well as game one against the Beavers. Rose increased her batting average to .491 while helping Luther increase its winning streak to 10 games. She is the daughter of Kevin and Mary Ann Rose.
