Decorah’s Josey Jewell is quickly making a name for himself.
Jewell, a 2013 graduate of Decorah High School, is rising up the depth chart as a part of the University of Iowa football team.
After redshirting last season, Jewell is now pushing for a starting spot on the black and gold roster.
He currently holds the No. 2 spot at outside linebacker, according to the preseason depth chart releseased recently. However, he’s been impressing coaches, fans and even his teammates of late.
All three starting linebackers last season – James Morris, Anthony Hitchens and Christian Kirksey – graduated, leaving three vacancies. So far, only senior Quinton Alston seems to have secured a starting spot. On the depth chart, Reggie Spearman and Travis Perry were listed as first team.
Saturday the Hawkeyes held a scrimmage, with Jewell taking some snaps with the first team defensive unit.
“He’s very aggressive, as you can see,” Alston told Mark Woodley of KWWL following the scrimmage. “He’s just playing fast. That’s what I love about Josey.
“He’s a hard-nosed guy. He’s Iowa. He’s a Hawkeye. So, he’s just going out there, he’s playing fast and I love it.”
Jewell left Decorah on a high note. The four-sport athlete helped lead Decorah to the Class 3A state title in 2012 and the runner-up spot in 2011. During his senior campaign, Jewell led the team in rushing yards with 1.314, averaging 7.9 per carry and scoring 21 touchdowns. On defense, he led the way with tackles at 100, with 62 solo and 38 assists. He had 11 solo tackles for a loss and four solo tackles. He had one interception returned 20 yards and recovered two fumbles.
Jewell is the son of Bobby and Paula Jewell.
Iowa opens the season Saturday, Aug. 30, at home against UNI.
