A Homecoming crowd was entertained by a very good Division III football game in Carlson Stadium Saturday afternoon. Unfortunately for Norse fans, the Storm of Simpson College posted a 27-17 victory.

The Storm led 20-3 at halftime. Jonah Zaimes made a 33-yard field goal early in the second quarter to pull the Norse to within 7-3. The Storm answered with touchdowns at 10:50 and 9:12 left in the second frame.

Touchdown runs of three-yards and one-yard by Ian Kuykendall in the third quarter, allowed Luther to pull to within three (20-17). Kuykendall’s first touchdown was set up by a 27-yard interception return by Jeremy Whalen.

Simpson answered with a five-play, 75-yard drive, capped off by a five-yard plunge by Cam Bunting. Bunting’s touchdown was his third of the game. He finished the afternoon with 153 yards on 32 carries with a long of 30 yards.

Storm quarterback Tanner Krueger also had a solid afternoon. Krueger threw for 263 yards that included a 50-yard touchdown strike to Austin Hronich with 9:12 left in the second quarter.

Kuykendall rushed for 143 yards on 29 carries and threw for 146. Justin Montgomery and Trevor Joiner both had three receptions. Montgomery finished with 59 yards and Joiner had 30.

Defensively, four Norse tallied double-digit tackle totals. Dante Joseph led all tacklers with 16. Eythan Blair and Patrick Beatty were next with 15 and 13 respectively, while Jeremy Whalen was credited with 10. Blair had a sack, as did Michael Noll.

The loss gives Luther an American Rivers Conference record of 1-5, 1-7 overall. Simpson remains in the hunt for the 2018 title improving its league record to 5-1, 6-2 overall.

Next week, Luther will travel to Wartburg College. The Knights (5-1) are tied atop the league standings with Simpson and the University of Dubuque. Kick-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
