The playoffs get underway this week, with things picking up over the next couple weeks.


Cross county

The road to state cross country begins this week with the conference meets.

Decorah and Waukon at Cresco today, Tuesday, Oct. 13, with the JV girls kicking things off at 4:30 p.m.

South Winn, Turkey Valley, MFL MarMac, Postville and Kee High is at the Upper Iowa Conference meet Thursday, Oct. 15, at West Union, with the JV girls running at 4 p.m.

The state qualifying meets have been split into two days with Class 3A and Class 4A competing Wednesday, Oct. 21, while Class 1A and Class 2A will race Thursday, Oct. 22. Only varsity runners compete at this meet.

State qualifying meet assignments will be posted sometime this week for all classes.


Football

The first round of playoff action is Friday, Oct. 16, at 7 p.m., for all contests. Every team in the state will compete in the playoffs in pods as assigned by the Iowa High School Athletic Association. Round two will take place Friday, Oct. 23, at 7 p.m. Following the second round the pods will be redrawn and announced.

As the Class 3A District 3 champions Decorah (6-1) received a first-round bye in the postseason. Selected into pod No. 5, the Viking will play the winner of the Charles City (0-5) and Wahlert Catholic (4-2) contest. 

In Class 2A, Waukon earned a first-round bye with a match-up coming with either New Hampton (2-5) or Forest City (3-2) in round two of pod No. 6.

North Fayette Valley (2-5) is also in Class 2A; however, the TigerHawks have been placed in pod No. 8 and will play at Crestwood (3-3) in round one. The winner will be pitted against either Union (0-7) or Monticello (4-1).

South Winn (6-1) will host Nashua-Plainfield (1-6) in the first round of the Class A playoffs as a team in pod No. 6. A win will send the Warriors into round two versus either North Butler (3-4) or Newman Catholic (5-2).

From the same Class A district, MFL MarMac (6-1) and Postville (0-7) will meet in the first round of pod No. 9 with a win advancing either squad into the round two contest against either East Buchanan (2-5) or Bellevue (3-2).

Turkey Valley (2-4) and Kee High (4-3) will face off in Lansing in an Eight-Player pod No. 5 contest. Riceville (2-5) and Janesville (6-1) are the other two teams in the pod with the winners to meet in round two.


Volleyball

Decorah is in Class 4A Region 5 and hosts a first-round contest Tuesday, Oct. 20, at 7 p.m. against Mason City. The winner faces Waverly-Shell Rock Thursday, Oct. 23, at 7 p.m. in Waverly; The regional final is Tuesday, Oct. 27, at 7 p.m. at a site to be determined. Teams on the other side of the bracket include Boone, Webster City and Gilbert.

South Winn and MFL MarMac are in Class 2A Region 7 and will play each other in the first round in Monona, Monday, Oct. 19, at 7 p.m. The winner will face Sumner-Fredericksburg Wednesday, Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. in Sumner. Postville is in the same bracket and will play Clayton Ridge in Guttenberg Thursday, Oct. 21, at 7 p.m. The regional semifinal is Monday, Oct. 26, at 7 p.m. in Sumner, with the regional final Wednesday, Oct. 28, at 7 p.m., at a site to be determined. Other team in the bracket include Bellevue, Northeast, Beckman Catholic, Hudson and Cascade.

Turkey Valley and Kee High will face each other in the first round of the Class 1A Region 6 contest on Monday, Oct. 19, at 7 p.m. in Jackson Junction The winner will advance to play the winner of the Tripoli and Central Elkader contest Wednesday, Oct. 21, at 7 p.m. at Turkey Valley. The regional semifinal is set of Monday, Oct. 26, at 7 p.m. at Saint Ansgar, while the regional final will take place Wednesday, Oct. 28, at 7 p.m. at a location to be determined. Other teams competing in Region 6 are Wapsie Valley, West Central, Don Bosco, Dunkerton, Waterloo Christian, Ed-Co, East Buchanan, Saint Ansgar, Northwood-Kensett, Nashua-Plainfield and Riceville.

Competing at New Hampton versus the Chickasaws in Class 3A Region 5 is Waukon on Monday, Oct. 19, at 7 p.m. Osage will host the regional semifinal Wednesday, Oct. 21 at 7 p.m., with the regional final slated for Tuesday, Oct. 27, at 7 p.m. at Central Springs. Teams also in the bracket include Osage, Crestwood, Forest City, Clear Lake, Garner-Hayfield-Ventura and Hampton-Dumont-CAL.

North Fayette Valley will face off with Oelwein in the quarterfinal round of the Class 3A Region Monday, Oct. 19, at 7 p.m. in West Union. Union High School will host the regional semifinal Wednesday, Oct. 21, at 7 p.m., and the regional champion will be decided Tuesday, Oct. 27, at 7 p.m. at Center Point-Urbana. Other teams include Union, South Tama, Independence, Center Point-Urbana, Monticello and Vinton-Shellsburg.


Swimming

The Vikings will host the conference swim meet at Luther College, Saturday, Oct. 17, at 11 a.m.

The regional diving meet is Thursday, Nov. 5, with the swim portion of the meet Saturday, Nov. 7. Sites for the regional meet have not been announced. State is Friday, Nov. 13 (diving and preliminaries) and Saturday, Nov. 14 (finals).
