Decorah High School graduate and current University of Iowa student Hannah Maher was presented with a Distinguished Scholar Award, as announced by the Big Ten Conference.
Maher was one of 44 Iowa student-athletes honored.
Big Ten faculty representatives established the Distinguished Scholar Award in 2008 to supplement the Academic All-Big Ten program. The recipients must be letter winners in at least their second academic year at their institution and have a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.7 or higher for the previous academic year, excluding summer school.
The Big Ten recognized 684 student-athletes in 37 different sports as Distinguished Scholars. One hundred and one of the student-athletes maintained a 4.0 GPA during the previous academic term.
Maher, a junior biology major, is one of 11 women’s swimming and diving athletes at Iowa so honored. Last season, Maher registered eight top-five finishes, including a collegiate-best time in the 50-free in 23.78 seconds.
Maher is the daughter of Tracy and David Maher.
