An accumulation of stellar seasons came to an end at the State Wrestling Tournament for six Winneshiek County wrestlers, including a podium appearance for a Viking senior.

Decorah matmen Jackson Rolfs, Dawson Palmer and Andy Murphy, along with South Winn’s Ethan Maldonado and Logan Schnuelle and Turkey Valley senior Carter Reicks put on singlets and head gear at the tournament in Des Moines Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 14-16.

Murphy, a Viking senior, was the lone grappler to earn a spot on the podium, finishing seventh.

In the team races, West Delaware claimed the Class 2A title with 76.5 points. Running away with the Class 1A crown with 151 points was Don Bosco.

Overall, 14 of the 28 grapplers that advanced out of the Independence district, which Decorah and New Hampton/Turkey Valley competed in, went on to medal. In addition, seven wrestlers from the Northeast Iowa Conference earned a spot on the medal stand.

Within the Class 1A district where South Winn saw action, 18 of the 28 matmen made appearances on the podium.

“We had a great experience this week in Des Moines. It is always great getting our guys down to the State meet, but getting two kids who will be back on our team is even better. Ethan and Logan can bring this experience from the week, back to the rest of the team and can hopefully help lead us in the future,” said South Winn Coach Jacob Elsbernd.
