Gaining some much-needed confidence, the Decorah boys’ tennis team returned home from Viroqua, Wis., with a 5-2 win Monday.

“A varsity match in Wisconsin consists of four singles and three doubles matches with participants playing only singles or only doubles, requiring ten varsity performers,” explained DHS boys’ coach Reg Laursen. “As you can see by the scores, Aidan, Billy, Gabe and Hayden really took care of business in singles. There was never a doubt.”

“In doubles play, Finn (Deen-Lester) and Brendan (Hunter) got their first taste of varsity competition and came through in fine style at No. 3. Rex Huinker has been injured most of the season and his shots have been somewhat erratic since coming back. He and Edwin just weren’t consistent enough to overcome their veteran opponents. They made a real run in the second set but couldn’t quite seal the deal at No. 2,” said Laursen.

In JV play, Will Schwarz, Angel Pena, Alex Zweibohmer, Grant Timm, Noah Tapscott, Luke Walter, Owen Henning, Zach Garwood, Jesus Pena, Conner Cook, Benton Sparrow, Dane Cole, Nic Reilly and Caleb Huebner compiled a three win and five loss outing.

The Vikings open the postseason with district competition at Waverly-Shell Rock Friday at 8 a.m. after the event was rained out Wednesday.
