Recent Decorah High School graduate Jackson Penny has signed to swim at Eastern Illinois University (EIU).

Specializing in the breast stroke and individual medley, Penny has been coached by Mike Scheunke on the Northeastern Swim Team (NST). At the Iowa Swimming Senior Championships, he placed eighth in the 200 breast in 2:13.40 and posted his best time of 1:58.90 in the 200 IM to finish eighth. He also finished the 100 breast in 1:01.20.

“I chose Eastern Illinois University because it’s a young program with a new coach as of last year who is looking to establish EIU as a swimming powerhouse. I wanted a D1 program because I love to train and feel that Coach Sholudko has the same vision I have and will take me as far as I can go in swimming,” said Penny. “Unfortunately, most of my official visits were canceled because of COVID-19, along with sectionals being canceled, but I’m confident that I’ve made the best choice. Coach Mike (Scheunke of NST) was instrumental in helping me decide on the right program for what I want to do with swimming and providing the caliber of training to get me there.

Penny will be majoring in biology with a pre-PA emphasis.

“I’m looking forward to heading to Charleston and getting to meet my new teammates. Swimming has been my main focus for the last 12 years, and I’m very excited and honored to be at EIU,” concluded Penny.

Jackson is the son of Dana DeSimone.
