Decorah’s Hannah Maher and Allison Orvis continue to excel both in the classroom and in the pool.
It’s just venue that’s changed. Instead of Decorah High School, now it’s the University of Iowa.
Maher, a 2011 DHS graduate, and Orvis, a 2012 DHS graduate, were both National Honor Society members and three-time Scholastic All-Americans. In the pool, Maher and Orvis were four-time qualifiers for the Iowa High School State Swimming Championships. Maher’s accolades included second-place finishes in the 200-yd IM (2008, 2010), 200-yd breaststroke (2008, 2010) and third-place finishes in the 200-yd IM (2007) and 200 yd-breaststroke (2007). Orvis’s achievements included a state championship in the 200-yd IM (2010) and second-place finishes in the 100-yd backstroke (2010), 200 IM (2011) and 100 fly (2011).
Maher, a junior biology (pre-med) major, was recently named to the Academic All-Big Ten team for the second consecutive year. In the pool, she is a team leader for the Hawkeye women. At the recent Big Ten championships in Minneapolis, she placed 30th in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.08), 29th in the 200 breaststroke (2:20.16) and swam a personal best in the 50 freestyle (23.78). Overall, the Hawkeye women finished eighth in the competitive Big 10, which featured six teams in the nation’s top-30.
Orvis, a sophomore art major, was also recently named to the Academic All-Big Ten team. Her swim season culminated with a season-best performance at the Big Ten Championships. Competing in the 200 IM, she finished 23rd with a personal best time of 2:01.76, the fourth fastest in Iowa history and an NCAA B qualifying time. She also swam personal bests in the 100 fly (56.00) and 100 freestyle (51.43).
