The Decorah sophomore football team (0-1) started the 2014 season with a loss at home last Thursday against North Fayette Valley 28-6. 
“We played a good football team, and although we did some good things, our overall execution was not where it needed to be. We know the amount of improvement from week 1 to week 2 is usually high, and we look forward to making large strides in practice this week and understanding our assignments better,” stated Coach Jeff Freidhof.
After falling behind 14-0 in the first half, the Vikings took the second half opening kickoff and put together a 54-yard offensive series for a score. Shawn Shindelar scored the touchdown on the drive with a 33-yard dash to the end zone. The point after attempt failed.
Brendan Numedahl led the rushing attack with six carries for 52 yards while Shindelar had five carries for 49 yards. Jacob Roher was the leading special teams player with 39 yards in kickoff returns.
Defensively, Cade Klimesh led the squad with 3 solo and 4 assisted tackles. Other leading tacklers were Dawson Meyer with 4 solo and 1 assist, Blake Schmelzer with 4 solo and 1 assist, Dominic Mueller with 2 solo and 6 assists and Adam Hovden with 2 solo, 4 assists and 1 sack. Devin Brevig also had an interception on a two-point conversion attempt.
The Decorah sophomores return to action Monday, Sept. 8, at Waukon. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
