Sophomore Tyler Thompson will be the lone Viking bowler representing the Decorah team at state today (Tuesday, Feb. 19) at Cadillac Lanes in Waterloo, beginning at 10 a.m.

“It was fun to watch Tyler shoot a 299 game as he left a 7-pin on a pretty nice shot,” said Coach Keith Bruening. “We competed against two to three of the best teams in the state in this district and came up short as teams.”

Competing in the district meet Wednesday, held at Oneota Lanes in Decorah, the Viking boys took third place. West Delaware was the team champion with 3,020 with Western Dubuque (Epworth) ssecond with 2,943. Teams heading to the Class 2A state meet from across the state are North Scott (3265), Council Bluffs (3172), Clinton (3156), LeMars (3142), Cedar Rapids Xavier (3109), Keokuk (3099), Ottumwa (3049) and West Delaware (3020).

Baker scores for the Vikings were 162, 204, 176, 185 and 204.

Thompson had the top score overall at the Decorah district, bowling a 299 and 180. Keagan Einck was also strong with 190 and 195 scores. Coming through with scores of 168 and 204 was Justin Redenius. Also bowling were Luke Iverson (201, 151), Breydon Johnson (153, 184) and Nolan Jostand (130, 141).

“We came up short by a few pins, but the other teams knew we showed up,” said Coach Bruening. “I am awfully proud of these boys as they will all return for the 2019-2020 season. I wish next year was here as it is going to be fun.”

Decorah posted 2,450 points to finish third in the girls’ race behind Waterloo East and West Delaware. Advancing to state are: LeMars (2205), Maquoketa (1832), Clinton (1788), Keokuk (1787), Waterloo East (1783), Fort Dodge (1780), Cedar Rapids Xavier (1744) and CB Thomas Jefferson (1631).

Baker scores for Decorah were 133, 151, 211, 172 and 143.

The Lady Vikes were led by Audrey Casterton with scores of 201 and 148. Lexie Hauber was also on fire, posting games of 220 and 124.  Rounding out the top three for Decorah was Katherine Bruening with 163 and 176. Also hitting the lanes were Ann Meirick (173, 127), Maddie Putnam (155, 126) and Alexis Svestka (180, 146).

“The girls had a great year with continued improvement,” said Coach Bruening. “I challenged the girls and they met the challenge as they shot a 2,468 – the best our girls’ have ever shot. We have seven of the top eight girls back next season so I am very excited about our future.”
