The season kicked off with a bang for the South Winn softball team (2-0, 2-0 UIC) with a pair of wins over Clayton Ridge (0-2, 0-2 UIC) in Calmar Monday night. The Lady Warriors launched into the 2020 season with 4-2 and 11-6 wins over the Eagles.

Game one was a defensive struggle early as the Eagles loaded the bases in the first inning with one out. South Winn’s twirler, Eryn Luzum, responded with back-to-back strikeouts to escape the inning without allowing a run to score. Clayton Ridge was the first to light up the scoreboard in the top of the fifth with a lone tally, fueling the Warriors’ fire to win as South Winn plated two runs in the bottom of the inning. The Red and Gray added two more security runs in the sixth, then held the Eagles’ to one in the seventh to finish the game.

Luzum picked up the win with 11 strikeouts in her seven innings on the mound. Senior Liz Tieskoetter tapped out two hits for a trio of RBI to lead the squad to go with three stolen bases. Mackenzie Schirmer had the Warriors’ other hit and RBI of the contest.

South Winn got right to business in game two, scoring eight runs in the first three innings and padded its lead with three more in the sixth. The Eagles clawed at the lead to plate six runs in the contest; however, was held off.

It was win number two for Luzum, striking out nine and allowing six runs on eight hits and four walks. The offensive attack was led by Mary Frana’s double and a hit by Tieskoetter. RBI was the name of the game as the Warriors tallied 11 total, two each from Emma Houdek, Emmaleigh Ohrt and Liz Engelhardt.
