Two Luther College athletes were recognized by the conference this week.
Becca Girvan was named the softball pitcher of the week by the Iowa Athletic Conference while James Ayer was recognized for men’s tennis.
Girvan, a senior from Maple Grove, Minn., appeared in four games last week, posting a 4-0 record with 34 strikeouts, two shutouts and four complete games in 24 innings pitched. She twirled a no-hitter against D’Youville March 25, striking out 11 in Luther’s 16-0, 5-inning win. In addition, Girvan struck out nine against Wisconsin-Oshkosh and seven each against Carthage and Williams, while improving to 8-1 overall. She is the daughter of Dan and Gwen Girvan.
Ayer, a senior from Philadelphia, Pa., went 8-0 on Luther’s spring trip to Orlando as the Norse improved to 16-4 overall. He posted straight set singles wins over Hamline’s Tyler Antil (6-1, 6-4) at No. 3 singles and Carthage’s Tony Connell (6-4, 6-4), Elmhurst’s Quinn Jennings (6-4, 6-4) and Wisconsin-Oshkosh’s Jason Alexander (6-0, 7-5) at No. 5 singles. Ayer posted wins over Carthage, Elmhurst and Wisconsin-Oshkosh at No. 2 doubles with Kyle Appel and another against SUNY-Purchase with Aaron Ford. He is the son of John Ayer and Diane Belcher.
