It’s always a positive to start a season with a win and that is exactly what the Decorah girls’ basketball team (1-0) did Friday night, defeating Denver (0-1) on the road, 49-47.

“We played with confidence and executed our game plan well,” said Coach Shannon Quandahl. “We are improving with each practice and learning to become more disciplined on offense and defense.”

The Vikings and Cyclones butted heads early in a low-scoring first half as Decorah led, 17-16 at halftime.

Decorah had a slow offensive start to the second half as Denver leap-frogged to a 22-20 lead by midway through the third quarter.

Beginning the fourth frame with a 34-29 deficit, the Vikes scratched their way back to within striking distance, 47-46, with a minute to play. Taking advantage of several Denver mistakes, Decorah managed to strike in the closing minute to win, 49-47.

Leading the way with 20 points for the Blue and Red was freshman Bryar Duwe who sank four treys in the contest. Kylah Quandahl put up 11 points, while Ambria Pipho had 10.

The Vikes are at Mabel-Canton today, Tuesday, Nov. 26 at 7:30 p.m. They don’t have another scheduled game until Tuesday, Dec. 3, at Spring Grove at 7:30 p.m.
