It was a mixed start to the week for the Decorah girls tennis team as the Vikings split its two contests.

Road win
Monday night, the Decorah squad traveled to Osage, defeating the Green Devils 8-1.
The Vikes swept doubles play.
“I was really pleased with the mindset of the girls playing against girls they are familiar with from last season,” said Coach Larry Berland. “Osage returned five of their top-six from last year’s quality team. The Decorah girls had a game plan and executed it very diligently throughout thir matches.
“Kally Peterson and Anna Spencer again showing off their senior leadership got the Vikes off to a great start with two sound wins for the team. Both overpowered their opponents with dagger-like shots while committing very few mistakes. Vita Domnenko followed their lead and put together an attack that featured just about every shot in her arsenal. Her opponent found herself on the defensive from the beginning and just could not gain her footing for the comeback. Carina Yee played lights out in the beginning of her match and her thoughts turned to a name the score match.
“Ali Groux found herself in a real back and forth match to this point in the season by tweaking her game on the go to find what would work best. To be able to abandon what you are comfortable with when it is not working very well and come up with a new plan that can get the job done while playing the match is a huge sign of growth.”
The freshman duo of Mara Frienden and Ali Groux also were impressive at No. 3 doubles.
“Mara and Ali were forced to grow their game as a doubles team while playing their match. Down 4-7 playing to 8, they listened to their coaches, changed tactics and completely turned the tables on their opponents and came away with a big win. A win like that can really lift your spirits and enhance the growth process in your doubles technique.”
