It was a big couple of days on the courts for the Decorah girls’ tennis team late last week, playing three times in three days.

Moving on

Decorah’s determined play at the Luther courts Saturday earned the Vikings two regional team victories and advanced them to the regional final against a foe yet to be determined as some tournaments were postponed due to weather Saturday.

In their first round match up against a salty band of Osage Green Devils, Decorah took it to them in in each of the first sets but then had to dig deeper to find a way to defeat the Osage girls’ counter-attacks.  Independence was a very good team and pressured Decorah from the start.

“Mara Frieden’s final score of her Osage match looks like a blow out but it was anything but that. Mara has really come on as the season has unfolded. She finds a way to win by altering her game to fit the situation. Alli Groux found herself facing a charged up opponent and had to switch to a different gear to come away with a tie-breaker win against osage and remain undefeated for the day as she faced a very good player in the second round,” said Coach Larry Berland. “Soleil Smith played a very athletic opponent at three singles against Osage and refused to give into her opponent’s aggressive play. Targeting her backhand, Soleil’s returns became more dagger-like as she bumped up the depth and pace on them. Her match against her Independence opponent was undoubtedly her best match of the year. Cady Peterson had no trouble in coming away with a victory in her match with Osage. Putting on display solid groundstrokes and steady serving, Cady was able to put the ball where her opponent could not get a good return.

“Displaying attributes of the every ready rabbit, Morgan Brauer is in the best shape of any of the players on the court and that allows her to outlast her opponents on the court. Morgan quite simply does not give up any easy points during her matches. Payton Schutte had an easy time of it in her first match against Osage but found the going against her Independence opponent anything but easy.”
