With solid pitching and defensive efforts, the Decorah baseball team (13-13, 8-8 NEIC) earned two NEIC wins over Crestwood (5-15, 4-13 NEIC) Tuesday night on the road, 6-2 and 3-2.

“Ryan Schneberger and Cael Luzum did an outstanding in all of their innings of commanding all of their pitches. Our defense was very good again throughout the innings, we simply need to keep working to make all routine plays on the front end of innings,” said Coach Adam Riley. “As we finish up the conference season, we are seeing more consistent effort from a large number of athletes on our team, which is very enjoyable to see. We hope this consistency will lead to more offensive production to support our great pitching performances.”

The Vikes plated the first runs of game one in the second frame on RBI singles by Andy Murphy and Briggs Duwe. Back-to-back doubles by Keenan Tyler and Murphy handed Decorah a 4-0 advantage after the third inning. The Vikings added two more to their lead in the fourth, keeping the Cadets off the scoreboard until runs crossed home plate in the sixth and seventh innings.

Schneberger recorded five strikeouts in the contest to earn the win on the mound, scattering five hits in six innings of work.

In the batter’s box, Decorah had 10 hits. Murphy went 3-for-4 with a double, two singles and two RBI. Shelton had two hits and drove in two runs. Accounting for the Vikes' other five hits were Kailer McCabe, Schneberger, Tyler, Caleb Keck and Briggs Duwe.

Runs were harder to come by in game two as Decorah scraped by Crestwood, 3-2.

McCabe scored the first run of the ballgame in the top of the third frame on a Shelton single. The score would remain 1-0, in favor of the Vikes until the seventh when Decorah broke through with two more runs by Seth Shindelar and James Marx.

Undeterred, the Cadets put together some solid at-bats in the bottom of the seventh for two runs and left the tying run on second base as Decorah secured the win.

Striking out 10 batters, Cael Luzum was the winner on the hill, throwing a complete game.

Decorah tallied seven hits in the contest with Luzum providing three of them. McCabe, Shelton, Murphy and Duwe also tagged the ball for hits.
