It was a strong start to the season for the Decorah volleyball team as the Vikes (1-0) defeated Prairie du Chien at home Tuesday night, 3-0. Set scores were 25-15, 25-18 and 25-17.

Decorah used tough net play and resilient defense to get the win over the Blackhawks.

“This was a good first match for us,” said Coach Gina Holthaus. “A lot of things went well, but there are still many things we can improve on. It was nice to get on the floor and play to see where we are at.”

As a team, Decorah had 23 kills with 80 attack attempts. They served 73-for-80, with eight aces. In addition, there were 33 digs, two solo blocks and 20 assists.

Individually, Amanda Kuehner had nine kills, with 28 attempts. Brooke Berns had four kills and a block assist while going 9-for-11 at the service line with two ace serves. Emma Nierengarten had three kills and one solo block. Emma Johnson went 16-for-16 at the service line with 15 digs, while Lexi Svestka was 12-for-12 with four digs. Ambria Pipho dished out nine assists, had two kills and was 7-for-10 in serving. Cassie Wyatt handed out seven assists and was 8-for-11 in serves. 

Decorah begins tournament play Saturday at Charles City beginning at 9 a.m. and returns to its home court Tuesday, Sept. 3, versus Saint Ansgar at 7:15 p.m.
