The Decorah freshman football team (0-5) welcomed Caledonia to the local gridiron Thursday, falling 20-14.

“We played a pretty good game, despite being a little short-handed,” said Coach Scott Pierce. “We fought hard for four quarters, which was fun to watch.”

Following a scoreless first period, the Vikes go on the board when Brady Stille connected with Will Einck for a 14-yard touchdown. Decorah held a slim 8-6 advantage at halftime and extended its lead in the third quarter to 14-6 when Jaden Baker burrowed his way through the defense from two yards out of the end zone. The Caledonia Warriors fought back and scored two unanswered touchdowns in the final period to take the 20-14 victory.

Stille completed just 1-for-10 passes for the Vikes with his target being Einck. The ground attack was led by Baker, who had 10 carries for 68 yards. Lane Rolfs moved the pigskin 55 yards in his four carries.

Defensively, Stille was fierce with 11 solo and three assisted tackles. Baker and Jackson Knoke had five solo and one assisted tackle apiece. Rolfs provided three solo and three assisted stops. Kasey Krauskopf came up with one fumble recovery while Ethan Holthaus intercepted one Warrior pass.

The young squad will travel to West Delaware Friday, Oct. 11, for a 5 p.m. kickoff.
